Generally, the term ”bitrate” means the overall level magnitude of flow, the amount of data transmitted per unit time. Therefore, it has nothing to do with the inner features of the flow structure; its doesn't matter if the stream contains mono, stereo or five-channel audio with the text in different languages, etc.
Tests conducted by the specially invited experienced experts, specialized in subjective assessment of sounding quality, couldn't distinguish the sounding of original track on CD from MP3 track with the compression ratio 6:1 (which means that the bitrate is 256kbs). However, the tests were performed on small amounts of material, which was also not so qualitative (the bitrate shouldn’t be less than 320kbs).
Despite their popularity, the lower bitrates doesn’t ensure adequate quality of coding, which (wrongly) gave MP3 the bad name of “amateur format”. Actually, even though the bitrate of 256kbs, and even 320kbs also doesn’t ensure the transparent coding, the differences from CD Audio, used for the coding of test MP3, can be compared to the differences of CD Audio itself from the initial analogue signal, from which it was obtained through digitization. Of course, there are some losses, but they’re insignificant from the point of view of people who find the quality of CD Audio adequate for download music. Actually, their detection is a non-trivial problem that can be solved on Hi-Fi equipment.
Today, MP3 format has two huge advantages over the other available formats of its kind. One of them is that none of the existing similar formats fully guarantees the stable conservation of sounding quality on high bitrates. However, MP3 format withstood the test of time.
